In the original films, the first stocks were milled from real wood.  When the real M-1 slide would recoil during firing, 
it would shatter or split the wood on that side of the weapon.   So for the second film they went with cast aluminum stocks painted to look like wood. 
Heavy as all-get-out, they were. 
Less than 10 of these rifles stocks are known to exist today.
This  particular item comes complete 
with a "dummy" M-1 Carbine inside.
